History of a Legend
Harley-Davidson started life as a company at the very beginning of the 20th century, when two childhood friends, William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, started to build single-cylinder engines to amp up pedal bikes, before beginning to build bikes without pedals at all. In 1904, all the pieces came together, and the duo released their first motorcycles.
Innovation and improvement became the watchword of the company. With their first factory, the company began to output machines ever faster. Before long, the company’s bikes were seen on racetracks.
The First World War saw a great demand for the company’s new bikes—20,000 for the war effort alone—and by 1920, the company had made its mark as the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles.
The 20th Century
The company continued to thrive, becoming one of only two companies that continued to operate during the Great Depression. With the beginning of World War II, the company’s fortunes rebounded with an order for about 90,000 bikes for the war effort.
Throughout the rest of the 20th century, the company continued to build its offerings and its legend, each year producing iconic bikes and building the biker culture that became woven into the fabric of America like the very thread that Betsy Ross might have once used.
Today and Tomorrow
Innovation, style, sustainability, and performance continue to define the company’s product line into the 21st century. Harley-Davidson produces bikes for all kinds of riders—highway warriors and city commuters alike—with a wide variety of styles and builds.
